WOM – why care about word of mouth

Have you ever had one of those moments or perhaps you just came out of a great weekend and you couldn’t wait to get to work on Monday so you could either brag or share about the awesome events and experiences you had over the weekend?

I’m sure we’ve all experienced this at one time or another.  Maybe going to work wasn’t how you wanted to share the experience but perhaps you shared with a close friend or relative.   The point is you had a positive experience and you shared it almost immediately.  What about a negative experience?  Ever have one of those?

The numbers will be much higher than what was predicted or expected.  What am I talking about?  The iPhone 5 of course.  Did you stay up until the wee hours of the morning to pre-order yours?  I hate to admit it, but I did and I am going to receive mine on Friday unlike (apparently millions now) who will not see their pre-order until October.

29 billion and counting – the twitter connection

At the time of writing this blog, Twitter had reached over 29 billion tweets and counting.  So what is it about this little blue bird that has captivated the minds of so many fans globally?  What or how can we best use it and why?  Is this another one of those online gadgets that are going to suck whatever time we have left and not provide us with anything in return?  I know, I know, I’m always looking at ROI.

What I’d like you to do first is check out this link that gives you two options; the first is a live Twitter count (see the tabs) GigaTweet and the second is a live Twitter feed.  The count is great to watch just because it’s impressive.  Although I have to say the live US Debt Clock is far more impressive in size of numbers. a higher purpose for social media

I’ve officially been blogging about it for almost a year.  Social Media is going strong and why wouldn’t it? With FaceBook having hit its 500 million-member mark, LinkedIn breaking the 70 Million mark and Twitter? Twitter has over 100 million users as of April of this year and is registering 300,000 new users per day.  There are on average 55 million tweets per day with over 600 million search queries per day.

So yes indeed, Social Media is being used for Marketing Purposes and combined with the right strategy can be a successful venture for most individuals and corporations.   But here is my question; Is Social Media just for business, branding, creating buzz and selling a product or service?

do more with the new privacy settings on facebook

Because I am a big stickler when it comes to security online and having seen my friends FaceBook profile hacked, I am always looking for new information on how to protect oneself from the potential dangers of hackers and privacy in general.  Because FaceBook is at the 500 million user threshold and everyone we know is on or joining including great grandma, I thought it would be appropriate to give you additional feedback on protecting your privacy on this platform.

The one thing to remember is that if you want to maintain privacy, do not post anything online.  Knowing that this just isn’t a reasonable request, you have to find ways to keep up with the changes and also do what is necessary before something happens.

Always remember what I wrote in my previous blog, 5 simple steps to protect yourself from hackers on FaceBook, BE SENSIBLE.  We live in a new age where everything is transparent and the old adage of what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas no longer applies and what happens in Vegas now stay on YouTube, Viddler, Delicious, Digg and other social sites.  So yes, be careful and if you do get that urgent email from a close friend asking for 5,000 dollars sent immediately by wire, call their family first.  Or better yet, call your friend as they may still be in bed while this is all happening.  You’d be surprised at how many people actually fall for these scams.
