a higher purpose for social media

I’ve officially been blogging about it for almost a year.  Social Media is going strong and why wouldn’t it? With FaceBook having hit its 500 million-member mark, LinkedIn breaking the 70 Million mark and Twitter? Twitter has over 100 million users as of April of this year and is registering 300,000 new users per day.  There are on average 55 million tweets per day with over 600 million search queries per day.

So yes indeed, Social Media is being used for Marketing Purposes and combined with the right strategy can be a successful venture for most individuals and corporations.   But here is my question; Is Social Media just for business, branding, creating buzz and selling a product or service?

I got involved in Social Media almost two years ago just to see what all the hype was about; back in the day when FaceBook really was being used to find old schoolmates and family members not seen in many years.  After all it was through FaceBook that I connected with my cousin Tony whom I hadn’t seen in over 30 years. And it was through FaceBook that I stayed in touch with cousins who could also keep me up to date on how some family members were doing as they battled with personal challenges.

And best of all, I recently saw the photos of our latest addition to the family, my nephew’s firstborn. So yes, Social Media has served in so many ways. And yet I believe and know that Social Media has a grander purpose.  We now use it for networking, creating buzz around a product, service or company and individuals.  Social Media has the ability to make or break a company and business through the force of human communication, interaction and networking.

And yet, here I am writing about the greater purpose of Social Media.  Think back to just a few short years ago when we used thermal fax paper. Or cell phones were referred to as bricks.  Email was not well known yet and FaceBook didn’t exist. Back then we connected through AOL Chat rooms.  But the yearning has always been there. We have had this desire to connect to others in the outside world.  Looking for like minded individuals that would either share in a hobby, passion or just passively kill time online talking about anything. As Seth Godin put it, we connected to our tribes.

Fast-forward 10 years and here we are. FaceBook is soon to be released as a motion picture.  If it were a country, it would be the world’s third largest country.  Over 500 million inhabitants participating in communications daily throughout FaceBook.  Over 700, 000 business now have a business page also referred to as a Fan Page.  And yet I still feel we are missing the greater picture.

When I can post a Tweet to my 12000 plus followers and know that on a perfect day (if everyone sees my message), I have the potential to reach 10 million or more people, only now you can begin to see the true power of Social Media.

When I can post something on my FaceBook wall and I get requests from friends in my network that ask to re-post it through their networks, now you can begin to see the power of Social Media.  Think about it.  We have the ability to reach out to millions and encourage them in some way. Say something that could motivate them and perhaps get them through a challenging situation.

This is the TRUE POWER of Social Media.

When was the last time you were able to communicate with someone who lost his or her family in the Middle East?  Or help out a charity that overnight raises millions to help those who just survived a major earthquake?  When in the history of mankind have we been able to communicate and reach out globally to help others in the blink of an eye?  The answer is simple – Never!

If you only had one opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, would you take it?  The words of Leo Buscaglia are so true.  He did not know about Social Media when he wrote the following words – ‎”There are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give” We now have this power and ability to make these words come true on a whole new level.

So I say to you, have you figured out that Social Media is the means to a higher purpose?  Find it, discover it and use it to help those that are so desperately looking for it.
